A Brand-New Look

The New Engine of the 2023 Sportage

The redesign of the Kia Sportage is more than just skin-deep, and the biggest changes might be happening under the hood! The previous gasoline engine is being replaced with a new 1.6 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that generates 177 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque. It will be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission designed to deliver very smooth and efficient shifting.

Only one gasoline engine is offered, as all other versions will be equipped with hybrid powertrains! The base-level hybrid powertrain is composed of a 1.6 L engine, called Smartstream, and a 44 kW electric motor. These two combine to deliver a much higher total output of 226 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque!

Kia has not yet revealed any information regarding its fuel consumption rating, but it should be quite similar to that of its cousin, the Tucson hybrid, which consumes about 6.4 L/100 km on average. Another even more fuel-efficient model, a plug-in hybrid, is said to be in the line-up too, but we'll have to wait for more information.

The Sportage will be equipped with a MacPherson front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension, while the hybrid version will also feature an E-Handling system for truly impressive handling. What’s more, all versions sold in Canada come standard with all-wheel drive, making it truly ideal for our difficult winter conditions. You can even control its performance thanks to the four driving modes (Eco, Sport, Snow and Intelligent) as well as paddle shifters to change gears manually, allowing you to control the vehicle's handling and have fun behind the wheel!

Even More Technology

As soon as you open the doors of the new Kia Sportage, you will notice just how much the interior has changed. Just like the exterior, it been completely revamped and modernized.

The infotainment system and instrumentation are now fully digital and feature two huge 12.3-inch screens connected by a large black frame. The center screen makes it easy to connect wirelessly with Android Auto^tm and Apple CarPlay^tm.  What’s more, the unique shape of the air vents on the dashboard is highlighted with chrome accents.

The Sportage also offers an advanced suite of active safety technologies with many standard and optional features, including:

• Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection;
• A 360-degree camera system;
• Driver Attention Warning System;
• Blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert;
• Highway Drive Assist.

In addition to its new technologies, the Korean automaker showcased the much roomier cabin, especially in the back, so that taller passengers in the rear can travel much more comfortably.
