What are the incentives to drive green in a zero emission vehicle?

The transports sector is the second largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada. The combustion vehicles we use for our daily commute substantially contribute to that! Transport Canada now grants a zero-emission vehicle incentive of $5,000 on purchase or lease of a battery-electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. To be eligible, the vehicle must seat 6 passengers or less, be able to cover long distances and its base model must have a starting price of less than $45,000. Higher priced versions of these ZEVs will also be eligible on some conditions. On top of the federal incentive, the Government of Quebec will grant individuals a rebate of up to $8,000 on purchase or lease of an electric vehicle.

There are many advantages to drive an electric vehicle. It doesn’t generate any greenhouse gas and its engine wears much less than that of a conventional vehicle. In addition to saving substantially on gas, its maintenance is a lot less expensive.
